One of Ghana’s foremost mining towns, Obuasi in the Ashanti Region, leads in the production of gold in the country; but little can be said about its educational fortunes especially with the quality of its infrastructures. St Joseph R/C Primary School for special needs children happens to be one of the schools within the Obuasi Municipal Assembly that lacks good infrastructure to make teaching and learning pleasant.
Tigo, through one of its Corporate Social Responsibility programmes dubbed Shelter 4 Education, identified the needs of St Joseph R/C Primary School for Special Needs Children and has provided the school with a new, fenced six classroom block fully furnished with the state of the art educational materials and a playground.
At an inauguration ceremony to hand over the new building to the school, the Municipal Chief Executive Officer of Obuasi Municipal Assembly, Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, paid a glowing tribute to Tigo Ghana for being a network that always makes the development of people its major concern. “Tigo Shelter 4 Education has come to enhance the quality of education in this municipality and I can attest to that as a fact today right here. Tigo Ghana Shelter 4 Education is charting the right path in education,” he said.
In an interview with Biztechafrica the Municipal Chief Executive noted the challenges his municipality is facing in the area of education and hopeful that with the introduction of Tigo’s Shelter 4 Education in Ghana and also in his Assembly there is going be a positive turn around in the education sector.
The headmistress of St Joseph R/C Primary School for Special Needs Children, Mrs Christiana Adei, thanked Tigo Ghana for such an edifice and promised to take good care of it and also use it to help improve the quality of education especially for children with special needs in the municipality.
Mrs Gifty Bingley who heads Tigo Ghana Corporate Communications and CSR in her remarks reiterated Tigo’s commitment to education in the country thus coming out with a programme like Shelter 4 Education to empower school going children in deprived communities across the length and breathe of the country to have access to quality educational infrastructures that would help shape them to become future leaders.
Shelter 4 Education is Tigo’s new CSR initiative which will see the company put up six unit classrooms with Headmaster’s office, Staff common room and KVIP for some selected schools in makeshift structures or in need of renovation across the country.
