Who is a metrologist and what do they do? The task of a metrologist is to ensure that the measurement of physical quantities – weight, distance, surface, capacity, mass and so on – is based on a unified, accurate and comparable set of measures at national and international level. This may include the measurement of electric current, temperature, light intensity, and so on.
What are the activities of the metrologist job? Creating, investigating, preserving and utilising national standards for the measurement of physical quantities – working out, testing and implementing new methods for measurement – exercising metrological control and supervision over the means of measurement, identifying the size of any error or source of error, so as to establish how reliable the means of measurement is. May also advise others, including government committees, on how to solve such problems.
Where is it done and under what conditions? In laboratories and offices in a normal work environment.
What tools/equipment do they use? Measurement tools – standards, measures, patterns, measurement systems, testing equipment with different accuracy, computers, software; normative documents, technical and company documentation, reference books, catalogues.
What do you need to succeed? You need to have completed higher education, a masters degree, in the field of natural and technical sciences, preferably physics, mathematics, chemistry. Ability to concentrate, remain attentive, a concern for precision, and self-discipline are important.
