Who is a microbiologist and what do they do? The microbiologist carries out a wide range of activities related to the investigation of the form, structure, physiology and biochemistry of microorganisms and their interaction with the environment. The findings may be applied in agriculture, food production, the water industry, health services, pharmaceuticals, or environmental conservation.
What are the activities of the microbiologist job? Carrying out laboratory microbiological experiments to obtain certain compounds and consumer goods – obtaining new highly active strains of microorganisms with genetically fixed production qualities – developing new microbiological methods for the diagnosis of sick people and animals, for the conservation of food, drink and animal feed and for the preservation of the environment.
Where is it done and under what conditions? In laboratories, computer centres, and libraries, hospitals, research institutes, veterinary research stations. Work in sterile conditions is done in special cubicles. Often pathogenic and toxic substances are used. In these cases protective clothing and other protective means are used.
What tools/equipment do they use? Laboratory equipment, instruments and measurement devices, various chemical and biological substances, working documents, computers, scientific publications, production regulations and standards.
What do you need to succeed? You need to have completed university, with a masters degree and higher, in the field of biology or microbiology
