A nurse assists doctors in the treatment of patients, in caring for them and nursing them.
What are the activities of the nurse? Work activities include- complex nursing care- admission of patients to outpatient clinics or hospitals- recording information about patients and constant monitoring of changes in their mental and physical state of health – active participation during ward rounds by the doctor – preparing aids and surgical instruments for doctors, disinfection and sterilisation of these, active participation during examinations, procedures and operations (surgery) – administration of prescribed drugs to patients – taking samples of biological materials (urine, blood, etc.) – measuring and monitoring vital functions (blood pressure, pulse, etc.) – giving first aid to patients in an emergency – home care.
Where is it done and under what conditions? Primarily in medical facilities such as clinics and hospitals. The job will usually involve working shifts and coming into contact with a variety of chemical substances. It can also be physically demanding. Some nurses work in the community, visiting private homes to give home-based expert nursing care, in local doctors’ surgeries, or in occupational clinics in industrial companies or in similar clinics in schools, colleges and universities, in some countries.
What tools/equipment do nurse use? Syringes, splints, thermometers, and other measuring and diagnostic devices; tools and aids used for taking blood samples, for taking swabs and for other types of examinations; bandages, disinfectants and detergents. It requires Nurses, of course, also use their own hands and the spoken word is important, too.
What do you need to succeed ? You need to have done a relevant high school or college nursing course or medical training as well as having a positive attitude to people, patience, dependability, quick reactions and judgement, manual skill and physical fitness.
