Who is an operations mechanic and what do they do? The mechanic’s work includes a wide range of work activities connected with the operation of plant & machinery.
What are the activities of the operations mechanic job? Inspection and repair of manufacturing, power-distributing and transport machinery, carrying out repairs (incl. major overhauls) connected with general reconstruction work, doing functional testing and activation work, manufacturing separate parts and components of machines and equipment, putting repaired machines back into service (incl. certificates) and adjusting the machines within specified tolerance ranges.
Where is it done and under what conditions? This job is usually done in a wide range of workplaces such as manufacturing plants, power plants and utilities, agricultural enterprises, trading companies, services and anywhere else in shops and large units; it may be done outdoors or where the object of the work is hard to get at and you may be exposed to noise and dust.
What tools/equipment do they use? Normal fitter’s hand tools (screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers, etc.), measuring instruments, circuit testers, metal-working machines and other shop floor equipment (grinders, drills, etc.) and your own hands.
What do you need to succeed? You need vocational training, accuracy, fast judgement, manual dexterity and technical imagination.
