To protect the prison complex as sentries or guards inside the prison, the entry or exits to the prison, or outside the prison area – escorting accused or condemned persons, possibly using service dogs – serving in special armed guard units – taking action in case of fights between prisoners, riots, attempts to escape or other offences against the prison regulations, possibly using coercive means or firearms – performing checks on people or their luggage and confiscating illegally held or transported objects – identification of people entering or leaving the prison area.
Where is it done and under what conditions? Mainly within the prison premises (indoors and outdoors). Changing weather conditions and shift-work must be expected.
What tools/equipment do they use? The authority of the prison guard him/herself, but it if needed it can be supported by a firearm.
What do you need to succeed? You need to have completed high school with school leaving certificate (university entrance level) and a special training course for prison guards, physical and mental fitness, be able to make rapid responses and decisions, to enforce your authority, have self-discipline, and be reliable.
