Who is a pizza maker and what do they do? The pizza maker prepares and cooks pizzas in pizzerias and restaurants.
What are the activities of the pizza maker? Preparation of the dough, kneading and forming it into balls which are then left to prove, then rolling them out and working the dough by hand to form the bases, adding the toppings, seasoning and baking.
Other tasks involved are ensuring cleanliness in the working environment, observing the health and hygiene regulations and organising the storage and preservation of foodstuffs. The pizza maker co-ordinates his/her role with that of the staff who wait at tables. He/she has contact with suppliers and, if he/she is the proprietor of the business, also with customers. The work may be done as an employee, or on a self-employed basis, and can include working in ‘take-away’ outlets.
Where is it done and under what conditions? Generally, the work is conducted in an area divided into two sections: one is equipped with an oven and work surfaces and is where the preparation and cooking of the pizzas takes place, the other is for the customers. The hours are very flexible and mainly involve evening work, including Sundays and holiday periods.
