Who an agronomist and what do they do? The task of an agronomist is to manage the production of plants in agricultural companies and cooperatives.

What are the activities of an agronomist?
The main work activities are – determining the technological processes in planting the crops, in seed farming, vegetable growing, fruit growing, viniculture and arranging for them to be carried out – managing and modifying the agrotechnical and work processes in the production of plants – determining the ways of growing the crops on different tracts of land with their respective soil conditions – deciding how to sow and seed, providing nutrition and protection for the plants in line with approved seeding and sowing schemes – choosing and procuring the seeds, fertilizers and other materials – drawing up the seeding and sowing schemes and production plans in accordance with the requests of the customers, orders received, market developments and livestock production plans – managing and determining the exploitation of the resources of the land – carrying out analyses and laboratory tests of soils and making the soil assessments – determining the fertilization processes – drawing up crop production plans – maintaining operational documents – ensuring co-ordination with livestock production.

Where is it done and under what conditions?
The job is carried outdone partly in an office or similar space and partly in the open air, where varying and even extreme weather conditions must be expected. In the busiest season of agricultural work, i.e. during the harvest in summer and also during the spring, you must also be prepared to work overtime or at weekends.
What tools/equipment do an agronomist use? Primarily various transport vehicles, computer technology, telephone, and the spoken word.

What do you need to succeed?
You should have completed a course at an agricultural university that specialises in agronomy. You also need management skills, ability to work in a team and, above all, a positive attitude to working on the land.
