Who is a flight attendant and what do they do? The duty of a steward/ess is to take care of the passengers in the aircraft and ensure safety in the entire passenger area.
What are the activities of the flight attendant? -The steward/ess invites the passengers on board, shows them their seats, may assist with the storage of luggage – provides instructions to passengers on safety issues and the safety equipment provided on the aircraft, generally oversees operations and ensures safety regulations are obeyed in the passenger area – the steward/ess may also need to calm down any passengers who are frightened, answer various questions – and will look after children who are travelling alone and any disabled passengers who need help – the job also involves providing regular refreshment and services on board, incl. newspapers, magazines and the sale of certain goods – ensuring correct and prompt handover of the on-board snack-bar and sales account – ensuring discipline and complying with the instructions of the head of the cabin crew in case of emergency situation or an accident – close co-operation with other crew members of the plane.
Where is it done and under what conditions? On an aircraft you may have to put up with time zone changes during long distance flights, and, of course, you will be frequently away from home, working shifts around the clock, including weekends.
What tools/equipment do they use? Catering equipment for preparing simple refreshments, trolleys for delivering them, manuals of emergency procedures and emergency rescue equipment and methods, and the spoken word.
What do you need to succeed? You need to have completed secondary education and obtained a certificate of ability to perform this job after previous training with the airline, presence of mind, ability to communicate with people and exercise authority, cultivated appearance and manners, good communication skills, and patience.
