Who is a tanner and what do they do? The job of a tanner is to process leather of all kinds (cowhide, horsehide, calfskin, pigskin, goatskin, sheepskin, etc.) in physical/chemical as well as mechanical ways.
What are the activities of the tanner job? He/she prepares various chemical solutions and baths for leather processing (tanning liquor, dye bath) – sorts leathers for further processing – softens and leaches the leather with calcium sulphide lye – tans the leather with chromium or grease, and controls the tanning process, modifying and regulating the concentration of the bath – greases, squeezes, and dyes the leather- cuts, splits and de-hairs leather – remotely controls the technological processes of the tannery.
Where is it done and under what conditions? In workshops and factories where you may be exposed to the effects of various chemicals.
What tools/equipment do they use? Various machines that remove flesh and hair from the skins and hides and squeeze, split dye and iron them, hot-air equipment, driers, drums, pits, hand-operated aids and other tools for leather processing.
What do you need to succeed? To have completed an apprenticeship, be good with your hands, and have the ability to react quickly.
