Who is a police officer and what do they do? The police officer’s/inspector’s duty is to take care of a very broad range of police work; they maintain law and order, protect people and property and investigate crimes. They are also usually called to accidents and emergencies.
What are the activities of the police officer job? Co-ordination and control of road traffic and railway transport police services from general and special police departments, e.g. patrol, inspection and supervisory activities – co-ordination and control of the protection of buildings and persons, police transport of people, materials and shipments, escorting trains, protection of railways, airports and other buildings and passengers – investigations and enquiries, e.g. in the area of traffic violations and accidents or verification of the technical qualification of road transport users and vehicles – routine and investigative activities of the criminal police – arresting people who have committed criminal activities – criminological and technical and other similar professional tasks (e.g. identifying criminals) – work with special equipment and forensic laboratory technology, and special operative and technical work, e.g. applying intelligence technology, searching for drugs and explosives – performance of frontier guard service (prevention of illegal crossings of state borders, stopping smuggling, deportation of undesirable persons, etc. – airport police service duties (searching for missing persons, dangerous offenders, stolen vehicles, escaped prisoners, helping at natural disasters, and activities in the flight rescue service).
Where is it done and under what conditions? The work is done in offices as well as in the open air, wherever they are needed. Changing weather conditions and work outside normal hours must be expected.
What tools/equipment do they use? Normal office equipment, incl. computers, are used but a firearm or other weapon may be needed in extreme cases for self defence, or deterrence.
What do you need to succeed? You need at least complete secondary education and the necessary police training, physical and mental fitness, reliability, ability to act and judge quickly and accurately.
