Who is a masseur or masseuse and what do they do? The job of a masseur/masseuse is to massage people with problems e.g. of the back or muscles to improve muscle tone, spine position, deal with former injuries etc. or to prevent the recurrence these or similar troubles. Some masseurs may also offer massage for general relaxation and to overcome stress. Self-employment is not uncommon.
What are the activities of the masseur or masseuse? – These may include massages of the whole body, especially muscles, skin, connective tissue, joints, spine – special therapeutic massages and other massages – they may also carry out compressive massage in exactly specified points of the body (acupressure) if the diagnosis is known, or after the diagnosis is made, and on the recommendations of a physician – hydrotherapeutic and or other special treatments (traction, electrotherapy etc.) may be carried out with top sportsmen, professional dancers and ballet dancers on the basis of a doctor’s recommendation – they may also massage people in case of injuries during sports events, dancing and other performances – applying medical preparations and cosmetic agents, massage instruments, etc – and provide advice to clients on exercise programmes.
Where is it done and under what conditions? In massage salons and similar places. The work may involve contact with certain chemicals.
What tools/equipment do they use? Mainly vibrating and massaging instruments, massaging oils, etc., and especially skilful hands and fingers.
What do you need to succeed? You should have completed a massage course, be skilful with your hands and fingers, have the ability to deal with people and listen to their problems, patience, and physical fitness.
