Who is a pilot (harbours and ports) and what do they do? The pilot takes a vessel /a ship across safe waterways to or from its berth or anchorage in a harbour.
What are the activities of the pilot (harbours and ports) job? She/he also guides the ship safely across internal waterways or lakes, along canals, channels etc. and back again to a place from which it can by itself continue on its own course. Pilots work anywhere where ships need to be guided by someone with specific local knowledge of the conditions.
Where is it done and under what conditions? On the bridge of the pilot cutter or in the office of the pilot station or on the ship to be piloted itself. The activity is sometimes carried out in bad or difficult weather conditions and with illumination only from signal lights. In certain conditions, you may have to wear a life jacket for safety.
What tools/equipment do they use? The pilot’s own cutter for transport to the ship by sea and a car – by land, portable radio transmitter, ship navigation devices and equipment, rules and regulations, documents.
What do you need to succeed? You need a higher education course in “Ship – piloting” or a similar upper secondary course with a school leaving exam.
