Who is a psychiatrist and what do they do? The psychiatrist is a doctor who specialises in the treatment of mental illness. S/he can work in public or private hospitals, medical or health institutes or a private hospital.
What are the activities of the psychiatrist job? Examining the past of the patient; diagnosis of the disease, for example depression, psychosis etc.; building a relationship with the patient; selecting and using the right drugs, and/or providing therapy during successive visits by the patient.
Where is it done and under what conditions? Mainly in private or public hospitals.
What tools/equipment do they use? Computers in which are kept the records of the patient’s treatment and progress and instruments to measure the patient’s mental state, a range of drugs to treat various mental illnesses
What do you need to succeed? You need to graduate in medicine from a university medical school and then select the specialty of psychiatry. It is important for a psychiatrist to be patient and credible and to have good communication skills.
