Who is a an office junior and what do they do? She/he is a young office worker with basic education.
What are the activities of the job? S/he is in charge of performing very simple administrative tasks, such as putting stamps on envelopes, posting letters, delivering documents, distributing messages, parcels and other objects to the different departments. She/he can also distribute external and internal mail items to departments and be in charge of making photocopies. She/he may also go out on errands around the city.
Where is it done and under what conditions? In offices, banks, and very wide range of public organisations.
What tools/equipment do they use? Office machines, paper cutters, hole punchers, paper shredders, photocopiers; s/he may also do some straightforward copy typing or word processing.
What do you need to succeed? The necessary educational level for entry is relatively low; a basic general education is usually enough although literacy and numeracy should be at least average or better. Promotion possibilities may be towards more responsible and complex administrative and clerical tasks or towards transport and delivery work including driving vehicles, such as vans or light trucks. The first possibility would demand higher training in secondary education as well as relevant vocational training, e.g. in accounting, computing, archive work etc. etc. The second possibility would require the corresponding driver’s licences. Both options require higher training. To progress she/he needs to have at least average intelligence, to be tidy, and to like working either with figures or clerical work.
