Who is an art or design restorer and what do they do? The art restorer restores paintings, statues and other works of art, which have become damaged or worn in some way.
What are the activities of an art restorer? Examines the painting or other object, assesses the damage, selects the techniques, materials, dyes other appropriate renovation methods and restores the work, if possible, to its original condition. May also offer advice on care, repair and preservation of art works to others.
Where is it done and under what conditions? In artistic studios, and using chemicals such as dyes. Some of these chemicals may be flammable or toxic. Some work may be done outdoors, and there may be a need to travel to museums, art galleries etc to do the work.
What tools/equipment do an art restorer use? Paintbrushes, fine manual aids and tools.
What do you need to succeed? You need a secondary-level artistic education or completed secondary education, in-depth knowledge of artistic methods and techniques, including historical knowledge, abilities in the field of fine arts generally, patience, ability to concentrate for long periods, and manual skills
