Who is a multimedia designer and what do they do? The task of a multimedia designer is to prepare data for the programming of multimedia-based product.
What are the activities of the multimedia designer job? She/he adjusts the graphic form of texts, pictures and other materials for use on a computer display. She/he makes diagrams showing the succession of individual screens, the links between the user’s options offered on a particular screen and the screens that should follow after the choice of an option. He/she also determines the interconnection of individual screens with data files, with picture files and other sources. He/she basically composes a screenplay or flowchart or “storyboard” of a whole programme, which is subsequently processed by a programmer – with the use of his/her own programming language – into his/her own programme. He/she often functions as a link between the camera crew, the director and other members of the stage crew on one hand and the multimedia product programmer on the other. In cooperation with the camera crew, he/she edits, combines and prepares the picture and sound into a form which the programmer needs and which is optimal from the viewpoint of a computer user.
Where is it done and under what conditions? In offices, where the working environment has few disadvantages.
What tools/equipment do they use? Computers and other information technology.
What do you need to succeed? You need university education, creativity, aesthetic awareness, a feeling for graphics, picture, colour and shape as well as a certain talent in the visual arts. A multimedia products designer should also be aware of the needs of the computer user. A basic grounding in programming and film-making activities is also important in order to be able to prepare the data for the programmer in the required way. Ability to work in a team is very important.
