Who is a carpenter and what do they do? The carpenter’s task is to make, repair and maintain wooden constructions and their component parts.
What are the activities of the carpenter? Measurement, designing, marking dimensions on wood, cutting to length and shaping of individual parts of wooden constructions – assembling various kinds of carpentry products like roof timbering, prefabricated storage huts, tables, benches, doors, crating, complicated constructions such as church spires etc.- assembling wooden constructions to support derelict buildings – maintenance and repair of carpentry constructions and the conservation of wood.
Where is it done and under what conditions? In workshops as well as directly on construction sites. Work at high levels above ground on objects that are not easily accessible, in dusty and noisy environments is to be expected.
What tools/equipment do they use? Circular, frame or chain saws, woodworking machines such as sanding or planing machines, drills, axes, hammers, planes and other carpenter’s tools and their own hands and feet.
What do you need to succeed? You need vocational training, manual dexterity, physical agility and fitness, spatial awareness, the ability to work in a team, good eyesight and hearing.
