George Boateng, the man who wanted to contest President John Dramani Mahama in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential primaries has finally been granted bail by the Madina Magistrate Court in Accra.
Her Worship, Prsicila Dapaah Mireku the presiding judge of the court on Wednesday granted George Boateng bail at the sum of GH¢5000 with two sureties to re-appear on July 13, 2016.
George Boateng shortly after the acceptance of his plea for bail by the court was seen on phone making frantic efforts to get friends or relations as surety until late afternoon when he had his way out.
George Boateng who is popularly referred to as “Bombo” for his hardline criticism of government was arraigned before the Madina Magistrate Court on Wednesday morning following a bench warrant that was issued for his arrest.
He spent the night at the Ayimensah Police Cells and was brought to the court on Wednesday morning.
The Presidential hopeful, according to sources, was arrested by a horde of security personnel believed to be a joint operation from the National Security, Police and Military and La NMA Environmental Health Unit who stormed his rented residence at Oyarifa near Madina in Accra.
Narrating the case to the Court, Kwara Lambert, the Environmental Health Officer at La Nkwatanang Madina Municipal Assembly (La-NMA) stated that the unit had served George Boateng notice to abate a health nuisance in his premises.
He mentioned that waste water and running water from his bathroom entered the premises of neighbours creating an environmental challenge.
The Officer further mentioned that his refusal to abate the nuisance led to the issuance of an order on April 19, 2016 asking him to appear before the court on June 8 which he declined resulting in the issuance of the bench warrant for his arrest on Tuesday.
“I know my arrest was master minded by people who feel I am hard on government but I know what I do is for the good of Ghana and I am not worried of the outcome of this case” George Boateng remarked.
