Who is canning worker and what do they do? The job of a canning worker is to operate the processes of food preservation and the production of tinned food.
What are the activities of the job? – He/she accepts and sorts material – processes the material through canning technologies, for instance by crushing, pressing, clarifying, filtering, evaporating, grinding, inoculating, boiling, freezing, sterilising, preserving by chemicals and other special methods of food processing – produces tinned products of fruit and vegetables inclusive of infant and baby food, fruit juices, syrups, fruit and dessert wines as well as frozen fruit and vegetable products, tins of meat and potato chips – controls the production of various ready-to-cook foods, special and dietary food – he/she stores and dispatches goods and does tasks associated with hygiene and the safety of food – takes samples for laboratory analyses- check the quality of products – helps with the maintenance and repair of machines and equipment.
Where is it done and under what conditions? In canning factories, where you may have to put up with noise, grease, high temperatures, fumes, and chemicals.
What tools/equipment do they use? A variety of machines that deal with the washing, sorting, pitting, peeling cutting, and pulping of fruit and vegetables, presses, filling machines, mixers, freezers, sterilizers, evaporators, and so on usually organised in production lines for tinning, drinks production and labelling.
What do you need to succeed? A completed apprenticeship, manual skill, a technical cast of mind and the ability to react quickly.
