Who is a conductor and what do they do? The conductor is an artist who conducts musical works played by an orchestra. The performance may be a concert given by an orchestra alone or an opera, ballet, or other musical performance being accompanied by an orchestra.
What are the activities of the conductor? The conductor studies and practises particular compositions with the orchestra. S/he ensures the artistic direction of the orchestra, S/he draws up plans as to how the music shall be played or the performance managed.
Where is it done and under what conditions? The job is done in theatres (especially opera houses, or ballet theatres) and concert halls, as well as recording studios. Work outside normal working hours must be expected.
What tools/equipment do they use? Musical scores and the conductor’s baton.
What do you need to succeed? You need to have university-level education in music, a gift for music, the ability to act quickly, and exercise authority, as well as ability to deal with people.
