Who is a forester and what do they do? The forester manages a forest or part of a forest entrusted to him/her or in a particular district. A larger forest district is called forest region and its administrator may be called a forest warden or forest manager. The forest region includes more forest districts.

Compilation of work plans and other economic activities in his/her district or region – preparation of contracts with forest owners and businesses doing various forestry work – detection and reporting of the occurrence of forest pests and organisation of protective measures against them – game census and keeping of game records – identification and reporting of damage caused by the game – supervision over sport hunting activities – management of the collection of forest seeds – selection of trees for cutting of wood – acceptance and transfer of wood to be exploited, checking that methods and regulations required by forest administration management (like optimum growth of trees, reforestation, keeping various records, etc.) have been complied with – monitoring the fulfillment of plans and compliance with forest work contracts – protective service, ensuring compliance with fire protection, safety and other applicable laws, regulations and directives.
Where is it done and under what conditions? In forests, with a limited exposure to changing weather conditions.
What tools/equipment do they use? The most common tools and equipment include the computer, automobile or other vehicle, wood measuring technology, stationery and spoken word.
What do you need to succeed? You need to have completed secondary or higher vocational school or a university degree with a focus on forestry, have a liking for and interest in, nature and the environment, and organisational abilities.
