Who is a midwife and what do they do? The midwife looks after pregnant women and their babies during their pregnancy and after the birth.
What are the activities of the midwife job? Advising pregnant women on how to have a trouble-free pregnancy; helping at the birth sometimes on their own, referring to a doctor if there are problems; caring for new born babies; helping to cure simple gynaecological problems. In some countries midwives run ante-natal classes for mothers to be and their partners, to educate them about the birth and good practice in parenting.
Where is it done and under what conditions? In maternity hospitals, clinics and private hospitals. A midwife will usually work shifts.
What tools/equipment do they use? Pillows and their own hands, drugs, and the means to inject them, oxygen masks etc. Teaching antenatal classes may involve the use of presentational equipment, diagrams, etc.
What do you need to succeed? A midwife should have graduated from a higher university in obstetrics. S/he (in some countries the profession is open to men as well) should be physically and mentally healthy, patient and self-controlled and be a good communicator.
