Who is a modeller and what do they do? Modellers or model makers manufacture models of products to be made, e.g. by means of casting. Moulds can then be made, in some cases, not by the modeller but based on these models. In other industries, modellers or model makers build models of the product in prototype to help designers get a better idea of the design and how it works in practice.
What are the activities of the modeller job? Creating models using e.g. plaster of Paris, or may work with a variety of materials including wood, plastic and metal. May work from a designer’s drawings or plans or photographs.
Where is it done and under what conditions? In a modeller’s workshop, where the environment may be noisy, dusty and dirty.
What tools/equipment do they use? Various machines and equipment, hand tools, aids and preparations. Wood, plaster, metal, paper or card may be used or, in some cases, electronic components.
What do you need to succeed? You need apprentice training and considerable manual and technical skill.
