Who is an operations electrician and what do they do? The electrician’s work consists of ensuring the proper functioning of electro-engineering systems and equipment.
What are the activities of the operations electrician job? Identifying and removing failures in all normal types of equipment, regular preventive and repair work, inspections, replacements and checks on electrical equipment and instruments with low, high and very high voltage levels of outdoor power distribution systems, incl. heavy-duty cables, electrical machinery, power-generating installations, heat plants and substations of high and very high voltage levels, overhauling some installations in power & heat plants, activating/commissioning electrical equipment, incl. issuing relevant certificates, handling of some power generating/distributing equipment.
Where is it done and under what conditions? This job is done both inside and outside buildings. You can expect to have to work overhead sometime, and to be exposed to changing weather conditions, noise and dust in other cases.
What tools/equipment do they use? Usually various hand tools (screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers, etc.), measuring and diagnostic instruments, voltmeters, oscilloscopes, soldering/brazing equipment and your own hands.
What do you need to succeed? You need vocational training, accuracy, fast reactions, manual dexterity, technical imagination and self-discipline.
