Who is a prison guard or prison officer and what do they do? The task of prison guards is to ensure protection of the inmates, order and adherence to law in prisons.
What are the activities of the prison guard or prison officer job? To protect the prison complex as sentries or guards inside the prison, the entry or exits to the prison, or outside the prison area – escorting accused or condemned persons, possibly using service dogs – serving in special armed guard units – taking action in case of fights between prisoners, riots, attempts to escape or other offences against the prison regulations, possibly using coercive means or firearms – performing checks on people or their luggage and confiscating illegally held or transported objects – identification of people entering or leaving the prison area.
Where is it done and under what conditions? Mainly within the prison premises (indoors and outdoors). Changing weather conditions and shift-work must be expected.
What tools/equipment do they use? The authority of the prison guard him/herself, but it if needed it can be supported by a firearm.
What do you need to succeed? You need to have completed high school with school leaving certificate (university entrance level) and a special training course for prison guards, physical and mental fitness, be able to make rapid responses and decisions, to enforce your authority, have self-discipline, and be reliable.
