Who is a shoemaker or cobbler and what do they do? A shoemaker’s job is to make and repair all types of shoes. The shoemaker usually works as a machine shoemaker making shoes in the shoe factory, or as a shoemaker for repairs dealing with repairs of damaged shoes in a shoe repair shop or shoe repair factory.
What are the activities of the shoemaker or cobbler job? The machine shoemaker’s job involves the – operation of machines and equipment for the production of casual, sports, health and other shoes made from leather and other materials – gluing individual shoe parts together, gluing on outer soles and heel patches, stitching welts and other shoe parts in various ways- making heels on the shoe last – hammering and levelling by hand.
The shoemender on the other hand- is involved in the reception of damaged shoes and working out the cost of repaired shoes to customers, collecting payments for repaired shoes, maintaining records and keeping accounts – removing damaged or broken heel pieces or other shoe parts with hand tools – attaching new heel pieces using hand or mechanical tools – – gluing on soles – stitching outside edges and shoe interiors on sewing machines – selling shoe polish, brushes and other shoe cleaning and maintenance agents, shoelaces, or other leather products such as belts, purses, etc..
Where is it done and under what conditions? In shoe shops and factories. Some workplaces are noisy and dusty you may also come into contact with chemical substances.
What tools/equipment do they use? Mainly sewing machines, presses, machine scissors, pressure devices, shoe lasts, hammers, glues, and various machines that perform parts of the shoemaking or mending process. You will also need a good pair of hands.
