Who is a traffic police officer and what do they do? The job of a traffic police officer is to monitor the safety of road traffic and its smooth flow and participate in directing it.
What are the activities of the job? A traffic police officer ensures adherence to the Highway Code, stops vehicles, takes part in checking the technical condition of motor vehicles. S/he checks the quality of road signs. Detects driving offences and identifies the offenders. S/he investigates traffic accidents. S/he does his/her service in his/her service district by way of patrols on foot or using the police car.
Where is it done and under what conditions? The hours of work are irregular, and s/he works night and/or day, as required. S/he does his/her service duties in a police uniform.
What tools/equipment do they use? Police patrol vehicles, communications technology, and, in many countries, the police officer carries a gun.
What do you need to succeed? To join the police force you need to be a graduate of a secondary school, higher school or university, who has done their compulsory military service or its alternative where this is part of the national requirements for citizens. You must be without a criminal record, physically and mentally fit (this is subject to examination). Each newly recruited member of the police force must subsequently complete the required police training programme.
