Who are they and what do they do? A tunneller drives new tunnels and renovates existing ones.
What are the activities of the job? Drives tunnels as well as underground galleries and pits, possibly using explosives. S/he assembles steel supports, wooden lagging, and other materials to support the tunnels.
Where is it done and under what conditions? Both outdoors and underground. There will be noise, dust and changeable weather conditions.
What tools/equipment do they use? Shields, drilling rigs and other machines, carpenter’s and other hand tools.
What do you need to succeed? You need introductory training or a specific course, the ability to respond promptly, and physical fitness.
