Who are they and what do they do? A whaler hunts, and cuts up whales, to sell the flesh, oil and other products.
What are the activities of the job? Once the harpooner has reached the animal, the whaler is in charge of loading it on board and quartering it in order to extract the useful parts and to get rid of the rest. S/he keeps the meat in the boat’s refrigeration rooms so that they do not spoil; cleans the used tools and equipment used for killing the whale and deposits the whale’s fat in special containers.
Where is it done and under what conditions? On deep-sea fishing boats on the high seas. S/he must spend long periods of time far away from home. S/he must endure harsh weather and s/he must be ready to live with a number of people in a limited space.
What tools/equipment do they use? Cutting and quartering tools, hooks, hoists, refrigeration equipment, and other containers.
What do you need to succeed? Although no particular level of education is required, this occupation demands a high degree of specialisation. Because of its uncommonness there are not many places where one can be trained as a whaler; it is mainly through experience and practice that this occupation is learned and improved.
