About Garden City University College Department Of Physician Assistantship
The Department of Physician Assistantship Studies was established at the beginning of the 2013/2014 academic year, with the drawing of programme of studies and the admission of the first batch of students. Eighty-five (85) students and eighteen (18) students were admitted at levels 100 and 200 respectively. Two physicians who had retired from Public Service were then invited by the University College to support and nurture the newly born department into maturity. How feasible was the programme and with which staff were we to kickstart a programme for the students were the two mainimmediate challenges which confronted the department
THE PROGRAMME OF STUDIES
Documents setting up the Department differentiate between Medical Assistants and Physician Assistants. Whereas “Medical Assistants” are well known in Ghana, the “Physician Assistant” is not. In a period of four years, the Department was to produce a graduate (BSc) in the model of a Physician who will work as primary care provider under such terms as the Medical and Dental Council would determine and regulate.
We used the early months of the inaugural semester to study the programme, to meet with the P.A. students and management of the University as well as other interested parties and have thereby reviewed the structure and contents of courses to make them more relevant to the mission of the Department. Admission criteria for students, employment criteria for staff and the processes of teaching and learning have also benefitted from the study.
