auctioneer

Who an auctioneer and what do they do? An auctioneer sells various items and property of value (antiquities, art, collector’s items of various historical figures, vintage wines, but also entire buildings, etc.) at auctions. They may also be called on to estimate the value of the items prior to sale and establish a reserve price (see also the “valuer”). Some auctioneers may sell livestock in a market to butchers or farmers.
What are the activities of an auctioneer? She/he announces the starting prices and, based on the interest of the participants, either increases or decreases them, until s/he sells to the only person offering to pay that price. Also takes care of the administrative side of the sale of the auctioned goods. Estimates the value of the items prior to sale and establishes a reserve price, agreed with the owner (valuer).
What tools/equipment do they use? Normal office equipment, an auctioneer’s hammer, their own voice.
Where is it done and under what conditions? In auction halls as well as in offices or similar spaces. If involved in valuation they may travel around to view items potentially for sale and value them. Livestock auctioneers will be in much less favourable conditions in livestock markets which are often dirty and draughty.
What do you need to succeed? You need to have completed secondary education and specific training for the job, ability to deal with people, a cultivated appearance and conduct including a clear speaking voice easily audible in a crowded room or other space such as a market, knowledge of the items being sold, arithmetical skills, ability to react quickly.
