Who is a customs officer and what do they do? The job of a customs officer is to see to it that goods passing through the border of two independent states are transported and delivered according to customs and revenue acts and regulations.
What are the activities of the customs officer? His/her activities are as follows- customs control, he/she finds out and checks quantity, type, properties of goods when they are imported, transported and exported – customs control of transport vehicles, luggage, consignments of goods, documents accompanying goods, and travel documents – he/she checks imports and exports regulated by the law on foreign exchange – deals with violations of customs law and foreign exchange offences – decides on the inclusion of goods of a commercial and non-commercial character into a proposed customs regime – decides on the tariff classification of goods – assesses and collects customs duties, taxes and charges in case of imported goods, the transit and export of goods, and does paper work concerning arrears of customs duties, taxes and other charges – supervises movement of persons, goods and means of transport in the customs border areas – does permanent supervisory duty – guards customs offices, houses and warehouses – regulates movement of persons and means of traffic in the customs area.
Where is it done and under what conditions? The working environment includes customs houses, that is both spaces such as offices and the exterior or interior of vehicles such as cars, trains, coaches, etc. Noise, exhaust fumes and frequent trouble or even a certain risk from the persons being checked are all aspects of the working environment.
What tools/equipment do they use? The tools used are checking and diagnostic devices, computers and other office supplies.
What do you need to succeed? To succeed in this job you need to have completed an apprenticeship, and have specialised training for workers of the customs service, You also need reliability, resourcefulness, an agile mind, ability to deal with people, and ability to gain authority.
