Who is a decorator and what do they do? The job of a painter and decorator is to carry out all kinds of painting inside and outside buildings and paperhanging on interior walls.
What are the activities of the decorator? – Prepares surfaces for painting (fills gaps in corners, cracks and joints) – prepares and mixes paints – paints and repairs various colours and types of paintwork – paints with a roller coating or using a stencil – makes decorative plastic paintwork – prepares surfaces for paperhanging (sanding down puttying, and general treatment of the surface with sandpaper, filling cracks etc.) – sticks wallpaper to walls.
Where is it done and under what conditions? In the interior of buildings and houses where you may find some places of work that are hard to access, and have to put up with dustiness and the effects of chemicals.
What tools/equipment do they use? The tools most used are various brushes, scrapers, ladders, spraying equipment, and paint rollers. You also need sound hands and legs.
What do you need to succeed? You should have completed an apprenticeship, be good with your hands, agile, have some aesthetic feeling, be physically fit, with good eyesight and colour perception.
