Who is an electrical fitter and what do they do? The fitter’s job is to install electrical equipment, putting the equipment into service, testing and reconstruction of power distribution systems – i.e. networks and connecting installations.
What are the activities of the electrical fitter? Activities of the job include: selection of, and provision for, necessary electrical materials and equipment, their inspection, especially in residential, industrial, or civic facilities and agricultural buildings and structures, the construction of public/street lighting systems, overhead power lines, power centres, traffic lights and road signs, installation of power plants, transformer- and substations, installation of electric switching and feeding stations and other equipment; installation of cable systems of high and very-high voltages, contact and contactless controls, alarms, and measurements with sets of equipment at external installations, managing and carrying out tests and measurements, and due care of used instruments.
Where is it done and under what conditions? This work is typically carried out at construction sites and buildings of all kinds. You will often have to work with objects in inaccessible places or which are otherwise hard to get at, and the work may be overhead and in changing weather conditions.
What tools/equipment do they use? The work is usually done using various electrical instruments, testers, solders, pliers and screwdrivers. Of course, you also need manual dexterity.
What do you need to succeed? You need to have vocational training, manual dexterity, general fitness, technical imagination and an ability to concentrate at work, with patience and accuracy.
