Who is a fitter and what do they do? The fitter’s work includes a wide range of fitting, adjusting, inspection and repair work in various industrial and power-generation/distribution installations.
What are the activities of the fitter? Installation, assembly, disassembly, testing, activation and repair of various machinery parts, such as conveyors, cranes, gearboxes, condensers, pressure vessels, navigation locks, water treatment plants, and machine tools as well as more complex units, e.g. building material manufacturing units, hydro engineering equipment, weighing machines, mills, and other heavy equipment and machinery, and also inspection, treatment and maintenance of a fitter’s hand tools, instruments and equipment.
Where is it done and under what conditions? In various environments including buildings, factory halls and even within the surrounding areas of power & heat plants. You should expect some difficulties such as work objects that are hard-to-access, changing weather conditions, exposure to dirt and high noise levels.
What tools/equipment do they use? Usually the normal fitter’s hand tools and equipment, power tools, welding sets and their own hands.
What do you need to succeed? You need vocational training, manual dexterity and technical imagination.
