geophysicist

Who is a geophysicist and what do they do? The geophysicist examines the structure and composition of the Earth and the processes both inside the earth and on its surface.
What are the activities of the geophysicist? She/he makes various geophysical measurements. In the geophysical observatory, she/he sets up and checks measurement apparatus and automated systems. S/he observes, and does mathematical modeling of, seismic waves, determines the degree of danger to areas in earthquake zones (this is important when planning large buildings, dams, nuclear power plants). S/he makes use of special methods to determine where there are breaks in the earth’s crust with the aim of discovering deposits of gas, oil, underground water and minerals.
Where is it done and under what conditions? Mostly inside -in the observatory, in the office while evaluating the data obtained, but frequently also in the terrain.
What tools/equipment do they use? Special measurement instruments (seismographs, various types of magnetometers, gravitometers and other devices). The values obtained are analysed by computers. In the interpretation of the results s/he applies special mathematical, numerical and computing methods. The work of the geophysicist is often international in scope and mostly conducted in English.
What do you need to succeed? You need to study physics at the department of natural sciences or Math/Phys of a university, with a specialisation in geophysics. You can also specialise further by attending courses at technical universities, i.e. at mining or geotechnical schools.
