Koforidua Polytechnic Admission Requirements

The following are the Koforidua Polytechnic Admission requirements of all programmes. The Koforidua Polytechnic admission requirements are grouped under the degree programme options available for application.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR KOFORIDUA POLYTECHNIC DIPLOMA PROGRAMMES

  1. DBS–(Accounting/ Management/Marketing/Purch. & Supply/ Entrepreneurship/ Secretarial Options)
    • Four (4) SSSCE/WASSCE passes (including English and Mathematics) Or
    • Four (4) GCE O-Level passes (including English Language and Mathematics) Or
    • Four (4) GBCE (RSA II) passes (including English Language & Business Mathematics) Or
    • NACVET/NVTI Typist/ 2 or 3 passes in Stenographer Certificate (for Secretarial option)
  1. DBS–(Statistics and Information Technology Options)
    • Four (4) SSSCE/WASSCE passes (including English ,Mathematics plus elective Mathematics or Physics) Or
    • Four (4) GCE O-Level passes (including English Language and Mathematics, additional Mathematics or Physics) 
  1. Certificate II In Fashion Design and Textiles:-2-Years

Passes in SSSCE/WASSCE/GBCE/’O’ Level subjects.

  • Communication and any other pass, Or
  • V.T.I Fashion Certificate Grade I or Grade II or equivalent.
  • JHS Graduates with knowledge and skills in Dressmaking
  1. Advanced Fashion Design and Textiles:-2-Year
  • Holders of City and Guilds Certificate in Fashion & Designing (Dressmaking and Tailoring) Or
  • Intermediate Dressmaking/Fashion Certificate plus at least one (1) year relevant practical experience Or
  • Four (4) passes in SSSCE/WASSCE subjects including English Language , Mathematics and any other elective subjects plus basic knowledge and skills in Dressmaking Or
  • Four (4) passes in GCE ‘O’ Level including English Language Mathematics plus knowledge in Dressmaking.
  1. Construction Technician Certificate (CTC) Part I
  • Four (4) SSSCE/WASSCE passes including English, Mathematics and Technical Drawing.
  • Technical Construction option Subjects: Craft (B/C, C/J, P/D, and Plumbing) and Advanced (B/C, C/J, P/D, and Plumbing.)
  • Passes in General Course in Construction (GCC)
  1. Mechanical Engineering Technician (MET) Part I
  • Four (4) SSSCE/WASSCE passes including English, Mathematics and Science
  • Technical Option Subjects :Engineering Crafts, Intermediate General Engineering (GE), MECP
  • Technical Option Subjects: MVM, Intermediate General Engineering (GE)
  1. Electrical Engineering Technician (EET) Part I
  • Four (4) SSSCE/WASSCE passes including English, Mathematics and Science and any two of the following – Applied Electricity/Electronics, Physics, Mathematics. 
  1. Catering Certificate II(formerly Cookery 812/1)- 2years
    • Passes in relevant SSSCE/WASSCE/GBCE/ GCE O-Level subjects.
    • NVTI Grade II or JHS Certificate with working experience.
  1. COOKERY 812/2
  • Holders of Cookery 812/1

10 CISCO

  • Passes in English and Mathematics
  • Passes in WAEC,ABCE (IT), GBCE (IT)
  • Basic knowledge in computer application
  • Any higher qualification(s) than above
  1. PRE-HNDPROGRAMME

The Pre-HND (Access Course) is now opened to SSSCE/WASSCE holders with Science Background who wish to pursue HND Programmes in either Science or Engineering.
The National Board for Professional and Technicians Examinations (NABPTEX) has designed an access course for SSSCE/WASSCE holders who could not obtain the required grades for direct entry into tertiary institutions and also for Technical/Vocational Institute graduates into HND Programmes. NABPTEX will conduct a final external examination after which successful applicants shall proceed to enroll in the under listed HNDPROGRAMMES:
AVAILABLE PROGRAMMES:

  • Automotive Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Electrical/Electronics Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Building Technology
  • Hospitality Management

Duration – One (1) academic year (i.e. Two (2) semesters of 16 weeks per semester)
Note: Candidates would be required to obtain at least 50% in each of the three (3) subjects namely: English Language, Mathematics and Science.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  1. SSSCE/WASSCE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY APPLICANTS

Applicants with SSSCE/WASSCE Science and Technology backgrounds who hold the following qualifications are eligible for enrolment into the Access Course:
Passes in three (3) subjects comprising at least one (1) core subject (English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science and Social Studies) plus at least one (1) science elective subject (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Elective Mathematics, Agriculture Science, Metal Works and any other Science related subject). Or

  1. SSSCE/WASSCE (Science/Engineering background only) who could not obtain the grades required for direct entry to the above-stated HND programmes. Or
  • Applicants must have a minimum of Craft Course. Or
  1. Applicants must have MET I, MVT I and EET I or its equivalent. Or
  2. Applicants should have a minimum qualification of Intermediate or Craft Certificate or its equivalent from a recognized examinations body. With regard to Hospitality Management, applicants must have Cookery 812/2.
  1. PROFESSIONAL PROGRAMMES

The Polytechnic has re-introduced the following professional programmes to be run on WEEKENDS on the main campus of the polytechnic.
AVAILABLE COURSES

  • ICA (Ghana) :-Levels I –IV
  • ACCA(UK)   :-Levels I –III
  • CIB(Ghana)   :-Levels I –III
  • CIPS(UK)      :- Levels I –III

To qualify to write any of the professional examinations above, the candidate SHOULD first register as a student of an appropriate professional body.
Entry Requirements: The basic educational qualifications include:

  • PART I:

REGULAR ENTRY: 5 GCE ‘O’ Level credits or 5 RSA II or 5 GBCE or
5 WASSCE/SSSCE passes including English Language and Mathematics. PLUS any of the following:

  • 3 ‘A’ Level passes with at least a grade ‘D’ in one subject  excluding General Paper    Or
  • 3 RSA III Or LCCI  III or3 ABCE or DBS in relevant subject areas Or
  • HND in relevant subject areas Or
  • Post- Secondary Certificate Or
  1. A very good first degree in a relevant subject area from a recognized tertiary institution Or
  2. 6 Passes at WASSCE with at least aggregate 20 including English and Mathematics
  • A Masters degree in a relevant subject area from a recognized tertiary institution Or
  1. 6 GBCE with at least aggregate 20 and including  English  and Mathematics
  2. Mature Applicants should be 25years of age minimum and must possess the relevant basic academic qualification. 

EXEMPTIONS
Exemptions may be granted in appropriate papers at Levels I &II to deserving applicants with relevant qualifications.
Study time: Friday 5.30pm – 8.30pm          Saturday 6.00am- 5.00pm Sunday 6.00am-2.00pm
Duration:  Four (4) months for every level                  

  1. E) CERTIFICATE PROGRAMME IN SMALL SCALE BUSINESS MANAGEMENT – 4 MONTHS (SATURDAYS ONLY)

ENTRY REQUIREMENT 
(i)Applicants with a minimum of Junior High School Certificate
(ii)Mature Applicants must be at least twenty-five (25) years old and must have relevant working experience.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR KOFORIDUA POLYTECHNIC HND PROGRAMMES

 
i.     SSSCE/WASSCE APPLICANTS

  • SSCE Candidates: Six Passes (A-D) in all subjects, including English Language and Mathematics; and at least three (3) of the passes must be relevant to the area of specialization.
  • WASSCE Candidates: Six Passes (A1-D7) in all subjects, including English and Mathematics; and must possess a minimum of C6 in any three (3) of the passes relevant to the area of specialization.

ii.   GBCE/ ‘O’/A’LEVEL/ABCE APPLICANTS

  • Five (5) GBCE /GCE‘O’-Level credit passes (including English Language and Mathematics) plus at least two (2)GCE‘A’ level/ABCE passes excluding General Paper.

iii.  APPLICANTS FROM TECHNICAL SCHOOLS (CERTIFICATE II APPLICANTS)

  • Applicants must have passes in three (3) subjects including English Language and Mathematics and Integrated Science plus three (3) relevant elective subjects/trade courses.

iv. DBS APPLICANTS

  • Four (4) SSSCE/WASSCE passes including English and Mathematics plus at least three (3) passes in relevant DBS subjects.

v.   TEACHER’S CERTIFICATE.

  • Applicant must have Three- Year Post-Secondary Certificate or Four Year Certificate ‘A’ with a minimum of two (2) years teaching experience, plus three (3) GCE O-Level or SSSCE/WASSCE passes in relevant elective subjects.

vi. MATURE APPLICANTS

  • Applicants must be twenty-five (25) years old and must show proof of age with birth certificate or any legitimate documentary proof of date of birth which is twenty-five (25) years old at the time of application.
  • Must pass a written test in English Language, Mathematics and General Knowledge to be conducted by the Koforidua Polytechnic.

vii.     OTHER APPLICANTS

  • Apart from the general HND entry requirements stated above, applicants with the following qualifications may apply for consideration to these HND programmes:

 
(a)   HND Secretaryship & Management Studies

  • Five(5) passes in Diploma in Business Studies (DBS) Or
  • Diploma in Office Management (DOM) conducted by WAEC, plus four SSSCE/WASSCE credit passes including English Language and Mathematics and two elective subjects.
  • Senior/ Private Stenographer Certificate.

 (b)   HND Programmes in  Engineering

  • Technician Certificate (at least Intermediate or a Craft Course) holders plus passes in SSSCE/WASSCE English Language, Mathematics and Science. Or
  • Passes in the three (3) Pre-HND subjects (viz. English, Mathematics and Science) plus at least an Intermediate/Craft or Technician Certificate, Or
  • Technician Certificate Part II  in CTC, EET,MVT or MET ,Or
  • Ordinary Technician Diploma (OTD) in Mechanical or Automotive Engineering or Construction.

(c)    HND Biomedical Engineering Technology
SSSCE Applicants

  • Credit passes in five (5) subjects comprising three (3) core subjects, English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science plus 2 Credits in electives, Chemistry, Biology Mathematics or Physics. The aggregate of the five (5) subjects must not exceed 20.

WASSCE Applicants

  • Credit passes in five (5) subjects comprising three (3) core subjects, English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science plus 2 Credits in electives, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics or Physics. The aggregate of the five (5) subjects must not exceed 30.
  • The applicant must have a pure science background from GCE O & A level and SSSCE/WASSCE.

(d)   HND Food Technology
SSSCE/WASSCE or Equivalent

  • Applicant must satisfy the minimum requirement of three (3) credit passes in the Core subjects (English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science), plus two (2) Elective Credits passes in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology or Agricultural Science. The aggregate of the five subjects must not exceed 20 for SSSCE and 30 for WASSCE. Or Five (5) GCE “O” Level credits in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Agriculture plus two (2) GCE “A” Level passes in any two of the following subjects:   Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Agriculture. Or Applicants must possess a Laboratory Technician Certificate from a recognized institution
  • Must have a minimum of two (2) years relevant working experience and
  • Must pass a written examination in English language, Mathematics and General knowledge conducted by Koforidua Polytechnic. Or The applicant must possess a Laboratory Technician certificate plus at least passes in NABPTEX English Language, Mathematics and Science. Or Applicants must have a Three Year Post-Secondary Teacher’s Certificate or Four-Year Certificate with a minimum of two (2) years teaching experience, plus three (3) GCE “O” Level or SSSCE/WASSCE passes which must include English, Core Mathematics and any science subject (Physics, chemistry, Biology, Agricultural Science etc.) OR Applicant must be a holder of Diploma in Education certificate. Or Applicants must be twenty-five (25) years old and must show proof of age with birth certificate or any legitimate documentary proof of date of birth which is twenty-five (25) years old at the time of application. In addition the applicant must pass a written test in English Language, Mathematics and General Knowledge to be conducted by Koforidua Polytechnic.

(e)    HND Postharvest Technology
SSSCE APPLICANTS:

  • Three (3) credit passes in core subjects i.e. English, Mathematics, and Integrated Science plus two (2) credit passes in relevant subjects (Chemistry, Physics, Economics, Biology, Elective Maths, Horticulture, Geography, Agriculture Extension, General Agriculture, Animal Husbandry).
  • The total aggregate of all the five subjects should not exceed 20. Or Three (3) credit passes in core subjects i.e. English, Mathematics, and Integrated Science plus two (2) credit passes in relevant subjects (Chemistry, Physics, Economics, Biology, Elective Maths, Horticulture, Geography, Agriculture Extension, General Agriculture and Animal Husbandry).
  • The total aggregate of all the five subjects should not exceed 30. Or Five (5) GCE “O” Level credits in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Agriculture plus two (2) GCE “A” Level passes in any two of the following subjects:   Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Agriculture. Or Mature Applicant must be at least twenty-five (25) years old and a Science/Agricultural graduate, and must show proof of age with birth certificate or any legitimate documentation.
  • Must have at least two (2) years working experience in Agricultural related field.
  • Must pass a written examination in English language, Mathematics and General knowledge conducted by Koforidua Polytechnic.

NB: ADMISSION OF DIPLOMA IN BUSINESS STUDIES (DBS) GRADUATES TO LEVEL 200 OF THE HNDPROGRAMMES OF STUDY
Applicants who hold Diploma in Business Studies (DBS) certificates with Distinction or Credit passes from any of the Ghana Education Service (GES) accredited institutions are eligible for admission to Level 200 to pursue any of the relevant Business / Science related programmes of study at the HND level. Similarly, applicants who hold DBS certificates with a minimum of pass(es) from any of the GES accredited institutions are eligible for admission to Level 100 to pursue any of the relevant business/science related programmes of study at the HND level. The above requirements should be backed with at least four (4) WASSCE/SSSCE credit passes including English Language and Mathematics.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR KOFORIDUA POLYTECHNIC DEGREE PROGRAMMES

(1) BACHELOR OF TECHNOLOGY (B.TECH) IN ACCOUNTING– (2YEARS TOP-UP PROGRAMME)

  1. Graduates of Higher National Diploma (HND) in Accounting and students transferring from similar programmes ran at other accredited/recognized institutions with a minimum of Second (2nd) Class Lower Division plus at least one (1) year working experience. OR
  2. Applicants with Part Three (III) qualification of ICA-Gh and ACCA or CIMA examinations. OR
  3. HND Graduates with passes lower than the minimum Second (2nd) Class Lower Division requirement indicated above but have worked in relevant fields for at least one (1) year may apply. Such applicants will be admitted based on interview performance. OR
  4. HND graduates from other fields or disciplines with a qualification lower than the minimum Second (2nd) Class Lower Division requirement with at least one year (1) year working experience in accounting related fields. Successful applicants will be required to take part in a 3-month bridging programme prior to the commencement of the programme of study.

 (2) BACHELOR OF TECHNOLOGY (B.TECH) IN AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERING –(2 YEARS TOP-UP PROGRAMME)

  1. HND Automotive Engineering, HND Mechanical Engineering (Plant and Production Options) with at least Second (2nd) Class Lower Division plus a minimum of one (1) year post-HND relevant industrial experience in an automobile or related field. Or
  2. City and Guilds of London Institute (Part III) with Licentiateship Or
  3. KNUST Diploma plus a minimum of one (1) year post-Diploma relevant industrial experience in an automobile or related field.
  4. Motor Vehicle Technician Part III (MVT III)

(3) BACHELOR OF TECHNOLOGY (B.TECH) IN BUILDING TECHNOLOGY – (2 YEARS TOP-UP PROGRAMME)

  1. HND graduates with a minimum of Second (2nd) Class Lower Division in Building Technology or Civil Or
  2. HND Graduates with passes lower than the minimum Second (2nd) Class Lower Division requirement indicated above must pass a selection interview to be conducted by the Polytechnic. Or
  3. Holders of Construction Technician Part III. Or
  4. Holders of Construction Technician Part II (old scheme) with four (4) or three (3) credit passes including Land Surveying.

(4) BACHELOR OF TECHNOLOGY (B.TECH.) IN CIVIL ENGINEERING –(2 YEARS TOP-UP PROGRAMME)

  1. HND graduates with a minimum of Second (2nd) Class Lower Division in Civil Engineering or Building Technology. Or
  2. HND Graduates with passes lower than the minimum Second (2nd) Class Lower Division requirement indicated above must pass a selection interview to be conducted by the Polytechnic. Or
  3. Holders of Construction Technician Part III. Or
  4. Holders of Construction Technician Part II (old scheme) with four (4) or three (3) credit passes including Land Surveying.

(5) BACHELOR OF TECHNOLOGY (B.TECH) IN PROCUREMENT MANAGEMENT – (2 YEARS TOP-UP PROGRAMME)

  1. HND graduates in Purchasing and Supply, HND Building Technology and students transferring from similar programmes ran at other accredited institutions with a minimum of Second (2nd) Class Lower Division plus at least one (1) year working experience. Or
  2. Applicants with Level 4 Foundation Diploma of Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply (CIPS-UK) qualifications or equivalent of Chartered Institute of Builders, UK may apply. Or
  3. HND graduates with passes lower than the minimum 2nd Class Lower Division requirement indicated above but have worked in relevant fields for at least one (1) year may apply. Such applicants will be admitted based on interview performance. Or
  4. HND graduates from other fields or disciplines with a qualification not lower than the minimum 2nd Class Lower Division requirement with at least one (1) year working experience in procurement related fields. Successful applicants will be required to take part in a 3-month bridging programme prior to the commencement of the programme of study.

(6) BACHELOR OF TECHNOLOGY (B.TECH) IN RENEWABLE ENERGY SYSTEMS ENGINEERING – (2 YEARS TOP-UP PROGRAMME)

  1. Entry is limited to holders of at least Second (2nd) Class Lower Certificate in Higher National Diploma (HND) in Renewable Energy Systems Engineering or HND Mechanical Engineering (Production and Plant options) Or
  2. HND in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or Chemical Engineering. Equivalent entry requirements are the KNUST Diploma in Mechanical Engineering/Physics. In addition, applicants must have at least one (1) year relevant industrial experience in an energy related field.

(7) BACHELOR OF TECHNOLOGY (B.TECH) IN TELECOM ENGINEERING –(2 YEARS TOP-UP PROGRAMME)

  1. Graduates of Higher National Diploma (HND) in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or Computer Science and students transferring from similar programmes ran at other accredited/recognized institutions with a minimum of Class Lower Division plus at least one (1) year working/industrial experience. HND Computer Science   certificate holders without appropriate course content in Electrical/Electronic technology in their programme will be required to do the requisite bridging courses. Or
  2. Applicants with Diploma in Electrical and Electronic related courses from recognized institutions with a minimum of one (1) year industrial working experience. Or
  3. Foreign students with qualifications equivalent to Ghana HND Electrical/Electronic Engineering certificate. Or
  4. Holders of Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technician Part III

(8) BACHELOR OF TECHNOLOGY (B.TECH) IN SECRETARYSHIP AND MANAGEMENT STUDIES –(2YEARS TOP-UP PROGRAMME)

  1. Graduates of Higher National Diploma (HND) in Secretaryship and Management Studies and students transferring from similar programmes run at other accredited/recognized institutions with minimum of Second (2nd) Class Lower Division plus at least two (2) years relevant post qualification experience in the relevant field. Or
  2. Applicants with Private Secretaryship Certificate who have ten (10) years working experience in secretarial field shall be admitted after passing a qualifying examination. Or
  3. Applicants with level one (1) qualification of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (ICSA) qualifying examinations. Such applicants (ICSA applicants) shall be admitted based on an entrance examination and interview performance. Or
  4. HND Secretaryship and Management Studies graduates with passes lower than the minimum Second (2nd) Class Lower Division requirement indicated above but have worked in relevant fields for at least five (5) years may apply. Such applicants will be admitted based on interview performance. Or
  5. Other HND graduates from other related fields of disciplines with a qualification lower than the minimum Second (2nd) Class Lower Division with at least five (5) years working experience in Secretaryship related fields. Such applicants shall be admitted based on interview performance.

(9)  BACHELOR OF TECHNOLOGY (B.TECH) IN MARKETING– (2YEARS TOP-UP PROGRAMME)

  1. HND graduates in Marketing, and students transferring from similar/related programmes run at other accredited institutions with a minimum of Second (2nd) Class Lower Division plus at least one (1) year working experience. Or
  2. Applicants with professional Diploma from CIM (UK/Ghana) Or
  3. HND graduates with passes lower than the minimum 2nd Class Lower Division requirement indicated above but have worked in relevant fields for at least one (1) year may apply. Such applicants will be admitted based on interview performance. Or
  4. HND graduates from other fields or disciplines with a qualification not lower than the minimum 2nd Class Lower Division requirement with at least one (1) year working experience in Marketing related fields. Successful applicants will be required to take part in a 3-month bridging programme prior to the commencement of the programme of study.

(10) B.Tech In Mechanical Engineering

  1. HND Mechanical Engineering (Plant or Production Options) with at least Second (2nd) Class Lower Division plusa minimum of one (1) year post-HND relevant industrial experience in a Mechanical or related field. Or
  • HND Graduates with passes lower than the minimum Second (2nd) Class Lower Division requirement indicated above must pass a selection interview to be conducted by the Polytechnic.
  1. Other Recognised Diplomas
  2. Mechanical Engineering Technician Part III (MET III)
  3. KNUST Diploma in Mechanical Engineering plusa minimum of one (1) year post-Diploma relevant industrial experience in a Mechanical or related field.
