Who is a lifeguard and what do they do? A lifeguard’s duty is to take care of safety operation at a swimming pool, bathing beach or other similar facility.
What are the activities of the lifeguard? Supervision of people who are bathing and over the entire operation of the swimming baths, pool or beach – ensuring the health and safety of swimmers as well as of people using boats and other crafts that may have been rented out there – rescuing drowning people – providing first aid – filling the pool – checking on the hygienic condition of the water and pool clarity – disinfecting – checking on the technical condition of water purification and treatment facilities, the water distribution system, pumps, and other technological equipment, their operation and regular maintenance – checking on water temperature – running swimming courses – providing instruction on how to rescue drowning people – possible supervising of junior lifeguards.
Where is it done and under what conditions? Near water and in water, where you may get sun burn and experience high temperatures as well as changing weather conditions. You will be expected to work at weekends and during vacation times.
What tools/equipment do they use? Equipment for water purification and treatment, water distribution systems, motor boats, binoculars, etc.
What do you need to succeed? You need to have successfully completed the course for lifeguards, in particular the course for swimming teachers (if swimming courses are included in lifeguard’s activities, which is usually the case), like water, have excellent swimming skills, physical fitness and agility, fearlessness, quick reactions, reliability, and self-discipline.
