Who is a referee and what do they do?
S/he is the person who officiates at a sporting competition and applies the rules of the game to it.
What are the activities of the referee job? Ensures the correct implementation of the rules in a sporting event; acts as a final arbiter of the rules imposing sanctions where necessary, judging how serious any infringement is; watches over the whole game and pays attention to any irregularity; keeps time and determines the breaks in play; decides how much extra time should be played when any incident has obstructed the normal course of the competition – if the sport has rules about the length of time a game should be played.
Where is it done and under what conditions? In a uniform different from the rest of the players. You may have to put up with hostility from players or the public, who may complain about decisions. Usually the work is outdoors, and subject to the prevailing weather conditions.
What tools/equipment do they use? Whistles, visual signals such as flags, red or yellow cards, score cards, etc.
What do you need to succeed? You need a level of education that allows you to express yourself properly, and a profound knowledge of the rules of the game. More experienced referees or umpires may become international referees or chair people in a sporting confederation.
