Who is a roofer and what do they do? The roofer’s job is to put in place roof tiles, slates, and other kind of roof coverings and repair these coverings including the total replacement of roof covering where necessary.
What are the activities of the roofer job? Assessment of the condition of the roof itself and its suitability for given cover and its replacement if necessary, (in some cases the roofer may collaborate with a carpenter as a result), lifting the roofing material etc. to the roof, placing tiles in rows, cutting tiles to shape and dimension, mixing mortar, placing, arranging and filling gaps between roofing materials, fixing joints, edges, and supports, covering shaped roofs, (e.g. baroque, renaissance style and other shapes), and working around roof windows, chimneys, etc., roofs of historical monuments, and maintaining and repairing existing roof coverings.
Where is it done and under what conditions? On roofs of all kinds of buildings including spires. You will have to work at a height, and in places it may be difficult to get at, and under different weather conditions.
What tools/equipment do they use? Mainly hand tools and jigs, e.g. tile cutting pliers, hammers, wood cutting saws, and their own hands and legs.
What do you need to succeed? You need an apprentice training, manual dexterity, physical agility, physical fitness, ability to work in a team, good eyesight and hearing.
