Who is a ship’s captain and what do they do? The ship’s captain commands the crew of the river or sea vessel and supervises all operations on the vessel including the loading and unloading of transported goods.
What are the activities of the ship’s captain job? He/she is responsible for the security of the vessel, crew, passengers and cargo. He/she deputises for the owner of the vessel in foreign ports in the countries where the vessel travels.
Where is it done and under what conditions? On rivers and seas. The weather conditions can be bad and you may have to be away from home for long periods.

What do you need to succeed? You need to have completed secondary, higher or university education, be in good health, have organisational abilities, communication skills, exercise authority, and be decisive. A river boat captain has to pass exams in navigation (depending on the size of the vessel); a sea ship’s captain must have two-years experience as an officer on board ship, pass an international examination and speak English.
