Who is a statistician and what do they do? A statistician collects, analyses and interprets quantitative data, for use by government bodies, scientists, medical professionals and others. His/her methods are based on probability theory and s/he contributes to the analysis of various phenomena, and helps others to make informed decisions about them. A statistician may find job opportunities in the management of the economy, in statistical, actuarial or insurance institutions, in research institutes, or as a broker at the stock exchange. Many of them, however, work for government departments and the civil service.

Where is it done and under what conditions? In offices, in a fairly comfortable environment.
What tools/equipment do they use? Special data examination and data processing methodology (mass statistical surveys, classification methods, average values, graphic representation methods). Information technology is one of the main working tools.
What do you need to succeed? You need to have completed university studies, with a specialisation in the mathematical field or directly in statistics at a faculty of science or a faculty of mathematics and/or physics. The work is intellectually demanding and requires advanced logical thinking, ability to think abstractly, to analyse and synthesise knowledge and apply it creatively to the solution of a particular problem. Patience and precision are a must.
