Who is a tobacco technologist and what do they do? The task of a tobacco technologist is to monitor the quality, processing, manipulation and fermentation of tobacco, production of cigarettes, cigars and other tobacco products.
What are the activities of the tobacco technologist job? The whole technological cycle from tobacco cultivation to the finished tobacco products – working out technological documentation for agronomic activities during planting, growing, picking up and drying of tobacco, estimation of its quality, processing and production of cigarettes and other tobacco products – operating the tobacco processing machines – control over observation of technological requirements – organising different tobacco processing operations.
Where is it done and under what conditions? In the open and on covered sites, receiving centres and working premises and halls. On such premises there are increased level of noise and dust in the air, and low concentrations of ammonia and methyl alcohol. Working clothes and other protective equipment are used.
What tools/equipment do they use? Machines and equipment for cutting, drying, cleaning dust out of tobacco, making cigarettes and packing, control and measurement devices for the regulation of temperature and humidity, transport vehicles, and auxiliary materials – various types of glue, paper, printing ink etc.
What do you need to succeed? You need to have completed higher education, with a bachelor’s or master’s degree, in “The technology of tobacco and tobacco products” or a similar special subject. Planning and organising skills, technical abilities, team working skills, enterprise, a well developed sense of touch and smell are important.
