UG Holds July 2015 Congregation Ceremonies

The University of Ghana has held the 2015 July Congregation ceremonies for students who recently completed various programmes of study at the University. The graduates are made up of 960 from the College of Basic and Applied Science (CBAS), 1402 from the College of Education (CoE), 492 from the College of Health Sciences (CHS) and 2062 from the College of Humanities (CoH).

This is the first time the graduation ceremonies have been organized according to Colleges since the implementation of the collegiate system.

The Congregation was divided into foursessions;two on Friday 24th July andthe other two on Saturday 25th July. The Friday morning session graduated students from the College of Basic and Applied Sciences (CBAS) which included the first of batch of Veterinary Medical Doctors, while the afternoon session had graduates from the College of Education (CoE).  Students who graduated in the morning session of the second day were from the College of Health Sciences (CHS) while those from the College of Humanities (CoH) graduated at the afternoon session.

Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ernest Aryeetey

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ernest Aryeetey in his address to Congregation highlighted some of the achievements of the University in the area of governance, academic affairs, Research, Innovation and Development as well as Physical Development. He also touched on the recent rankings compiled by Thomas Reuters that places the University in the 10th position among African Universities, the Times Higher Education ranking that places the University at 12th position and the Webometrics ranking for Africa which places the University at 19, from a previous position of 52.

He challenged the graduates to go out into the world, and do the very best they can wherever they find themselves as well as work hard, dream big, plan ahead, be ethical and honest in all their dealings.

The Minister for Education, Prof. Naana Jane OpokuAgyemang, attended the first session on the first day on behalf of the President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency John DramaniMahama.

The morning session of the first day was presided over by the Chancellor of the University of Ghana, His Excellency Mr. Kofi Annan. The Chairman of the University Council, Hon. Justice Dr. Samuel Kofi Date-Bah, presided over the morning session of the second day while a member of Council, Prof. John Meyer Hyde, presided over the afternoon session on behalf of the Chancellor.

Guest Speakers at congregation ceremonies were; Dr. S.O. Onwona, a member of the CBAS advisory Board and retired official of the African Development Bank (ADB); Mr. Felix Nyako-Pong, Managing Director, UniBank Ghana and Chairman of the CoE Advisory Board; Mr. KojoAddae-Mensah, Group Chief Executive of Databank Group and Member, CHS Advisory Board and Mr. Nene Amegatcher, Managing Partner, Sam Okudzeto and Associates, Chairman of the CoH Advisory Board.

Dr. Dominic Osei, from the first batch of graduates from the School of Veterinary Medicine delivered the Valedictory address during the CBAS congregation, while Mr. Frank Kofi Boadi, an MPhil graduate from the Department of Communication Studies delivered the valedictory address on behalf of Graduands from the CoE. The Valedictory address for the CHS was delivered by Dr. Dennis DansoKumi, a graduate from the School of Medicine and Dentistry while Mr. Samuel Aboagye from the Business School delivered that for the College of Humanities.
