Who are they and what do they do? The well digger ‘s task is to dig, modify and repair all types of wells.
What are the activities of the job? Making and repairing surface wells and cisterns that catch the water from springs, from premoulded structures, capturing and draining springs by pipes, capturing large scale water penetration by concreting – creating foundations and digging wells in all kinds and depths of soils, in sand (by digging, brickwork or by lowering a premoulded jacket), insulating wells – cleaning and disinfecting wells, repair or replacement of a defective well jacket, supporting the jacket with a frame, putting brickwork or concrete in place – and other work associated with the reconstruction and reclaiming of wells, and any necessary blasting.
Where is it done and under what conditions? In wells or in related buildings. The workplace may be difficult to get at, and there is the danger of falling. There will also be contact with soil and changing weather conditions.
What tools/equipment do they use? E.g. drilling machines, power hammers, mason’s tools, pulley blocks, etc.
What do you need to succeed? You need a training course for well diggers, good physical condition, manual dexterity and fast reactions.
