The Electoral Commission of Ghana has begun printing provisional voters’ register for the mandatory exhibition next month, a senior official has said.
The electoral roll for the 2016 polls will be exhibited for verification from July 18 to August 7.
Speaking at a forum with the Ghana Police Service on Friday, June 24, a Deputy Electoral Commissioner, Dr Amadu Sulley, said the register is being prepared already for the exhibition exercise.
“We are printing the provisional registers to get ready for the exhibition,” he said, “a very important role that you are going to play.”
This announcement comes a day after the country’s apex court, Supreme Court, ordered the Commission to provide the list of NHIS-registrants, whose names are to be deleted from the register.
The Commission had earlier proposed deleting the unqualified voters from the register during exhibition, but the Court gave the Commission up to Thursday to comply with its order.
Dr Amadu pointed out that the Commission will also make use of the polling stations to be used for the elections.
The polling stations, he said, have been expanded 23,000 to 29,000 in order to manage numbers and process for voting.
“We want people to come during the exhibition to be verified biometrically,” he emphasized.
“This will at least address the situation where these challenges come on the D-Day…and the machine fails to recognize my finger.”
He said the process will help to put in measures to avoid hiccups on election day.
